What are Giclee?
Giclee printing is a way of creating high quality printing, especially used for Art. Giclee prints are high quality paintings on acid-free heavy canvas. Giclees employ a special application process that uses a series of plates instead of brushes to apply the paint. Though the process is relatively new, giclee prints should maintain their beauty as long as any painting on canvas. The difference between a regular print (Prints / Posters) are that Giclee prints are very high quality prints with special application technique for paints with fade -resistant pigment inks on high quality canvas. This quality makes it desirable to own an art work and pass it on to future generations.
Giclee is pronounced as “Zhee-KLAY”!!
How is a Giclee different from a poster print?
Giclee print is different from poster print in three different ways. The basic criteria are:
Resolution: The resolution for a Giclee print has to be atleast 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch).
Paper: The paper used should be an archival paper and acid free. Anything better than it like Canvas also qualifies it for a Giclee print.
Ink: The ink used for Giclee printing are pigment based vs dye based for regular poster prints.
With the advantage over poster prints in three different dimensions, its far exceeds the quality and durability of a mere poster print.
What is Pigment based Ink compared to dye based inks?
The main difference between pigment based ink and dye based inks (other than the technical differences) are:
Pigment based ink are less soluble which makes them pretty robust when exposed to sunlight or any light source for that matter.
Pigment based inks have a longevity factor that dwarfs that of dye based inks.
How long is the shipping time?
The artwork will be shipped roughly 3-5 days after the order is placed. The time taken for delivery depends on where it is shipped to and the postal carrier’s time for that destination. (usually within 5 days).
How long do these prints last?
Giclee prints are extra high quality museum quality prints that are fade-resistant and can last for generations to come. Though the process is relatively new, giclee prints should maintain their beauty as long as any painting on canvas.
Can you distinguish between an original and giclee print?
In terms of quality it is very difficult to distinguish to an untrained eye. The only difference that can be made out if you have both in front is if there are strokes of painting in the original that gives some depth (like using a knife to paint would create ridges of paint). Other than that, these two versions practically look the same
Why are these works not signed by artists?
In some countries art is practiced in a communal fashion. What it means is that art is pursued for the sake for art and is not attached to an individual. Sometimes, the artists congregate in a single social place which is typically called an art village. Some of the paintings that you see in our catalog are from these art villages. Hence you dont see signatures on some of the paintings.
